Clandestino: TEMPORAL SEGREGATION

A conversation and artistic explorations of how time divides, separates and segregates

”Borders” and ”segregation” are often conceived as spatial lines of separation. But how are borders – between people and places, and the past and present – enforced and experienced through time?

Through audio-visual presentations and conversations between artists and researchers, this event explores how time becomes a border that segregates, excludes, and subordinates. The aim is to explore how temporal segregation manifests in prison, in asylum processes and camps, and how it can be traced in the silenced histories of the oppressed, and through the present-day reminders of violences inherited from a colonial ‘past’.

The event will be held in English. The conversation is facilitated by Shahram Khosravi, professor of Social Anthropology, Stockholm University; Annika Lindberg, researcher at the School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg, and Amin Parsa, lecturer at Halmstad University.

Participating artists and researchers include:

Nicole Fleetwood: writer, curator, and Professor of Media, Culture, and Communication at NYU, presenting Carceral Time and the Restructuring of Black Life.

Hayfaa Chalabi: illustrator, educator, and senior lecturer at the University of Arts in London, presenting Structural Apathy towards Refugees in Sweden.

Nontokozo Tshabalala: artist, poet, Afrofuturist, speaker and designer, presenting Pulling red threads through time. Where does it end?

Erling Björgvinsson: Professor of Design at the Academy of Art and Design, University of Gothenburg, presenting Imaginaries of Spatial-temporal ‘Home’ Security and Dispossession of ‘Surplus Aliens’: The Would-be Deportation Centre Lindholm in Denmark.

Sarah-Philipson-Isaac: PhD Candidate at the Department of Sociology and Work Science, University of Gothenburg, presenting ‘Islands’ of dispossession.

Bani Abidi: artist, presenting ’The distance from here’.

The event is organized by Critical Border Studies in collaboration with Clandestino Institut, with the support of Stiftelsen Anna Ahrenbergs Fond.
